[MSFC] Carl Badger Competes in 2018 Veteran World Championships
Carl Badger made his third appearance as a member of Team USA at the 2018 Veteran World Championships, held in Livorno Italy, October 8 through 14th. Competing in Veteran 60 Men’s Saber, Carl finished 6th out of 46 athletes.
Carl began the competition seeded 4th going into the pool rounds. He finished pools with 5 wins and 1 loss, falling only to Thierry Jamgotchian of France 5-3. His solid pool performance earned him 10th seed heading into the direct elimination round and a first round bye. In the round of 32 he faced a strong Italian opponent, Andre Bocoini, overcoming him 10-4. He went on to fence a familiar opponent in the round of 16, overcoming Carl Morris of Great Britain 10-8. The next round brought him up against a fellow Team USA fencer, Joshua Runyan, whom eventually defeated Carl and went on to earn the Bronze medal.
Carl was supported in Livorno by his wife Connie, and son, Benjamin. Benjamin Badger was a founding Mid-South Travel Team Member and stepped into the coaching role to support his dad. Carl is already back to work at Mid-South taking lessons and training for the upcoming Veteran North American Cup which will take place on December 14th-18th in Cincinnati, OH.
