[MSFC] 2019 Ryder Cup Saber RJCC and Vet ROC Athlete Information
As we prepare in the shadow of Hurricane Dorian, Mid-South Fencers’ club is excited to host the 2019 Ryder Cup Saber Region 6 Junior and Cadet Circuit in conjunction with a Veteran Saber Regional Open Circuit event the weekend of Sept 7-8th, 2019. If you are an athlete or family member, please read carefully, as this post includes important information regarding tournament participation and preparations needed to create an event with an outstanding display of competitive sportsmanship. We need your help to achieve this.
Parking
Mid-South Fencers’ Club is located at 125 North Gregson Street, Durham NC 27701. The direct number to the club is 919-286-3100. We are located at the intersection of Morgan Street and Gregson Streets. Pay parking exists throughout the Brightleaf district with the main pay lot at the intersection of Main Street and Gregson Streets. We encourage you to find parking and patron the local businesses at Brightleaf Square who can validate parking short term. Please do not park in the gravel parking lots adjacent to the fencing club on Morgan Street, you are at risk of being towed.
Event Start Times
Please double check your start times and note you must be checked-in, have your equipment checked, and be ready to fence by your posted event time. If we are running more than 15 minutes behind close of registration for the start of the tournament, we will make an announcement. Armory check will begin on Friday from 4-7pm and open at 7:30am on Saturday morning, 8am on Sunday.
Mid-South’s Athlete, Parent and Coach Spectator Agreement
Mid-South values creating a healthy sport environment for our fencers and recognizes building and maintaining a culture of positive sportsmanship requires cooperation among parents, coaches and spectators and also visiting families of opponents and their coaches. In order for fencers to grow as athletes, boundaries and guidelines must be set regarding the expectations of how parents, coaches and spectators will act. We are expecting a record crowd this weekend and management of the space will take community effort. Anyone not an athlete on the fencing floor will need a credential available at the front desk. If we deem it safe to allow parents and spectators onto the tournament floor, for ease of viewing, we will make an announcement. We agree all individuals in our venue are expected to do the following:
Show encouragement to all fencers.
Keep comments positive.
Respect personal and professional boundaries of fencers, referees and coaches by providing space and keeping safe distances away from the fencing floor.
Allow coaches and team leaders to coach, support and give advice to their fencers.
Volunteer if you want to be more involved: bout committee, food runs, photography or becoming an armorer are just a few ways our community can be supported.
Leave officiating to the officials.
Avoid or ignore drama and unnecessary controversy that is unproductive.
Help make our events a positive experience for us all.
Report disruptions of these agreements to any Mid-South coach or front desk staff.
Ryder Darwin
On behalf of the Mid-South community we would like to thank everyone for supporting this event. This tournament is held in honor of Ryder Darwin, a founding member of our club who tragically lost his life at the age of 21. He was a 3 time national medalist, a beloved friend, and drawn to fencing for the personal challenges offered to him by participation in our sport. This event began in 2014 as a way to honor his life and we are proud to offer the 2019 Ryder Cup as part of USA Fencing’s Regional Circuit. We would like to also extent our sincere thanks to the sponsors of this event, The Darwin Family and Durham Sports Commission.
