Check-in
Please have ready before you enter the building:
- Proof of USA Fencing Competitive Membership. If this is your first event outside your club or first national event, please check today and make sure you have a competitive membership. Often clubs only require a recreational membership and you will need to upgrade. You can login here to your USA Fencing membership and print out a copy of your membership card.
- Proof of age. This includes: Current USA Fencing card that states the athlete is “age verified”, copy of the athlete’s birth certificate, or a valid passport.
Armory Control
Dennis Crumpler is our armorer for this event. Please anticipate the same equipment standards as you would find at a National Tournament. Please ensure that your fencer has all of their equipment in good working order before arriving. FIE Gloves are required for all the saber events, including Y-10. If you have doubts about the condition of your equipment, then we suggest you make arrangements to order new gear or bring spares. We do have a small pro-shop in our lobby with a few items. Fencers are not required to have their names stenciled on their lame’s at regional tournaments. Armory control will open at the following times:
Friday 10/25 | Saturday 10/26 | Sunday 10/27 |
7:00pm- 8:00pm | 8:00am- End of final event | 8:00am- End of final event |
Tournament Etiquette
We are expecting dozens of athletes and their families; our space will be pushed to capacity. We suggest arriving one hour before close of registration for your first event in order to allow for equipment check and adequate warm-up. We have limited balcony seating for parent viewing that can reasonably hold 30-40 persons (capacity is 70 persons). Only athletes, referees and coaches will be allowed on the fencing floor during peak times. We will at times have some designated seating for parents on the main floor. Please respect the club’s equipment and community member areas. If you need something, please ask. If your child has finished fencing, please create space for other families to watch their children. Please review our Spectator Agreement if you have any concerns.
Photos and Video Etiquette
Photos and video are great! Video can be a excellent training tool, but mostly is a fun way to see your fencer evolve over time. Please refrain from using a flash during competition. Pictures will be posted on our Facebook Fan Page. Our hashtag for this event is #RyderCupRJCC and #BullCityRYC.
Awards
Awards will be given for the top 8 finishes in each event. If you need to leave before awards are given out, please let us know so we can distribute your medal. Award ceremonies will take place in our lobby.
Problems and Feedback
If you have a problem or concern, please make it known to one of our two front desk staff, or bout committee. We want to ensure safety and create a space for a positive tournament experience for everyone involved. We reserve the right to ask anyone to leave if not displaying sportsman like behavior.
You may email Jeff (tournament organizer) jeff@midsouthfencersclub.org or Jen (club owner) jen@midsouthfencersclub.org with any feedback or suggestions before, during or after the event. Your voice is appreciated.
About Mid-South Fencers, the Ryder Cup RJCC and Bull City
Mid-South Fencers’ moved into our first space in downtown Durham, NC in 2008. We moved into our current location on the corner of Morgan and Gregson in the fall of 2013.
On behalf of the Mid-South we would like to thank everyone for supporting this event. This tournament is named for Ryder Darwin, a founding member of our club who tragically lost his life at the age of 21. He was a 3 time national medalist, a beloved friend, and drawn to fencing for the personal challenges offered to him by participation in our sport. This event began in 2014 as a way to honor his life and remember the importance of community. We are proud to offer the 2018 Ryder Cup as part of the Regional Cadet Junior Circuit and Regional Open Circuit.
In 2018, Mid-South is led by three full-time and five part-time staff backed by the highest credentials in the United States. Mid-South’s focus has been on creating a fencing home for all levels of fencers from beginners to competitors with collegiate, national, or international aspirations in all three weapons. The Bull City RYC is the first RYC to honor the city of Durham. We love being a part of the Durham community! The bull is a community logo found across our great city. See how many bulls you can find on your visit. Thank you Bull City!
