RFC Tournament Aug 23-24
Written by Treasurer
Saturday, 30 August 2008

RFC had the honors of starting out the season this year.

AUG 23 –

An Open Foil event was held followed by a D and Under event. Two sets of pools were held such that all the fencers competed in the first round of pools and then the bottom 50% of seeds after went to the D and Under event directly, with both the Open and D and Under fencers competing in a second round of pools before moving on to DEs.

Open Foil Winners:

1st: John Crumpler (RFC)

2nd: Christian Crevar (RFC)

T 3rd: Jeff Cotter (RFC)

 T 3rd: Steven Pashby (RFC)

D and Under Foil

1st: Dale Dingle (AAFC) – earning an E08!!

2nd: Dave Aitken (UNAT) – welcome back to fencing!

T 3rd: Aislinn Seese-Klos (RFC)

 T 3rd: Alex Fogleman (RFC)

An Open Sabre was also held. Mid South and Raleigh Fencers dueled for the final places.

Open Sabre Winners:

1st: Jordan Benge (MSF)

2nd: Stephen Pashby (RFC)

T 3rd: James Dobbins (MSF)

 T 3rd: Mason Erb (MSF)

AUG 24 -

Open Epee was held with the same graduating scale to a D and Under event following.

Open Epee Winners:

1st: Christian Crevar (RFC)

2nd: Kelly Herrick (CFA)

T 3rd: Brandon Carroll (RFC)

 T 3rd: Michael Glapion (NCSU)

It was an exciting tournament with a B, a C and two Ds, which qualified it to be a C1 event. Unfortunately, there were only 14 fencers competing, so it did not reach the C1 level. Christian Crevar would have earned a C08 with one more fencer competing! Come out and fence folks! Come support your other local (or not so local) clubs and events!

D and Under Epee Winners:

1st: Jason Hite (NCSU)

2nd: Jim Kent (DFC)

T 3rd: Jacob Lete (RFC)

 T 3rd: Nicole Agresto (DFC)

Congratulations to all winners, particularly to Dale Dingle of All American Fencing Club for earning his E08.

U.S. Completes Historic Olympic Games
Written by Chair
Tuesday, 19 August 2008

The Fencing portion of the Olympic Games has finishd with the United States claiming six medals.  This total is the largest in U.S. fencing history and surpasses such traditional fencing powers as France, Hungary, and Russia.

As noted below, Mariel Zagunis (gold), Sada Jacobson (silver), and Becca Ward (bronze); swept the Women's Sabre event.  They then won the bronze in the Women's Team Sabre cmpetition.

Not to be outdone, the Women's Foil Team of Erinn Smart, Hanna Thompson, and Emily Cross moved up from their original seventh seed to take the silver medal.

Finally, the Men's Sabre Team of Jason Rogers, Tim Morehouse, James Williams, and Keeth Smart also claimed a silver medal.  Smart brought the team back from the brink of elimination twice as they defeated both Hungary and Russia by the slimmest of margins, 45-44.
